Retirement Income Lab

Four ways to draw the same pension and ISA. See how the income moves, how often each approach met its own spending rule, and what was left later — first on the central assumptions, then through every complete UK historical start and resampled market futures.

Read before comparing

Income is after tax

The target is money available to spend. The engine works out the pension withdrawal and tax needed to deliver it.

Variable rules promise different things

A percentage or spread-over-years rule lowers or raises spending with wealth. Its “success” cannot be compared with a constant target without also reading the income range.

History is evidence, not a forecast

The market tests use annual UK data from 1871–2020. They show sequence risk across many starts; they do not assign odds to the future.
